Editorial Reviews

From Amazon.com
Though Catherine Cookson passed away in 1998, her store of historic English countryside romances remains unexhausted. This latest posthumous book includes all of Cookson's favorite themes: class conflict, quirky local characters, skewered family dynamics, dutiful heroes, and virtuous heroines.

In the late 1940s, Michael Wallingham struggles to accept the reality of his post-war life. Having lost his vision in battle, Michael returns an embittered hero to his upper-crust family. Frustrated by his own weakness, his father's stern class formality, and his brother's jealousy, Michael finds solace and love in the arms of his nurse, Elizabeth Ducksworth.

Cookson fans will enjoy the careful development of this story line and the generous sprinkling of colloquial color. While the issues of class conflict may seem a bit stale to modern readers, themes of filial jealousy and marital vacuousness are eternal. A solid novel, even with its lack of profundity. --Nancy R.E. O'Brien

Product Description
If you look closely enough, you can find love everywhere. A descendant of a courageous band of Ojibwe, Birch Trueblood is now a local shaman doing a booming business with the New Age believers and tourists. With a young daughter to care for, he manages to mask his cynical attitude about life and his so-called art. But everything changes when he's called to work his magic at an historic old house where he meets a woman who's about to make him a believer. Rochelle LeClair has crossed paths with Birch before -- and has no reason to change her opinion that he's a fake and a charlatan. Running Rosewood, a fledgling bed-and-breakfast, Rochelle is forced to come face-to-face with Birch again when her eccentric aunt hires him to communicate with the house's ghostly presences -- but it's Birch's own presence that plays havoc with Rochelle's senses. As family rivalries and buried lies are exposed, the spirits of the past will come to light, along with the deepest secrets of Rochelle's heart.

Product Description
Heather Reed thought she was making the right choice when she decided to raise her daughter, Angel, on her own. But three years later, Heather realizes she needs help. Her career as an actress is faltering and Angel's more than she can handle alone. It's time to track down Angel's father...The only problem is he doesn't know Angel exists. Heather's search leads her to Whispering Winds, Wyoming. If Todd Winston is dismayed to see his old girlfriend show up in town, he's horrified when he looks into the angelic eyes of the little girl who is clearly his daughter. Todd flatly refuses to open his life to Angel...and Heather flatly refuses to leave town until she finds out why. Neither counts, though, on their unexpected desire to become a family. The only question is...is it too late?
