From Amazon.com
Fans of Helen Fielding's Bridget Jones's Diary will recall that at the end of that sly and funny version of Pride and Prejudice, singleton heroine Bridget landed her Mr. Darcy at last--Mark Darcy, that is. Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason picks up four weeks later, and already the honeymoon is over. In addition to discovering that the man of her dreams votes conservative, left-leaning Bridget is also feeling just a mite uncomfortable with the realities of sharing bed and board with another person:
V. complicated actually having man in house as cannot freely spend requisite amount of time in bathroom or turn into gas chamber as conscious of other person late for work, desperate for pee etc.; also disturbed by Mark folding up underpants at night, rendering it strangely embarrassing now simply to keep all own clothes in pile on floor.
But all of these problems pale to insignificance with the arrival on the scene of Rebecca, a beautiful, man-hunting arch-nemesis with "thighs like a baby giraffe" and absolutely no girlfriend code of ethics when it comes to poaching another woman's man. Before long, Rebecca's manipulations, Bridget's own insecurities, and a string of misunderstandings (starting with a naked Filipino boy in Mark Darcy's bed and ending with a suggestive valentine from Bridget's dry cleaner) result in "128 lbs. (good), alcohol units 0 (excellent), cigarettes 5 (a pleasant, healthy number), no. times driven past Mark Darcy's house 2 (v.g.), no. of times looked up Mark Darcy's name in phone book to prove still exists 18 (v.g.), 1471 calls 12 (better), no. of phone calls from Mark 0 (tragic).

Fortunately, Bridget has plenty of other problems to distract her. Her mother has returned from a trip to Kenya with a young Masai in tow--to her father's consternation; her best friends Jude, Shazzer, and Tom are all trapped in dating hell themselves; her apartment is in shambles thanks to a dotty carpenter; an unreliable ex-boyfriend has just reentered her life; and now someone is sending Bridget death threats--could it be Mark Darcy? If Bridget Jones's Diary was a modern riff on Pride and Prejudice, its sequel borrows several themes and devices (not to mention a section heading) from another Austen novel, Persuasion. And as in Austen's fiction, here the journey is the destination. A happy ending for Bridget and her pals is a foregone conclusion; how they get there, however, will have you on the edge of your chair--if you haven't already fallen off of it laughing. --Alix Wilber

Editorial Reviews

From Amazon.com
If you've ever paid off one credit card with another, thrown out a bill before opening it, or convinced yourself that buying at a two-for-one sale is like making money, then this silly, appealing novel is for you. In the opening pages of Confessions of a Shopaholic, recent college graduate Rebecca Bloomwood is offered a hefty line of credit by a London bank. Within a few months, Sophie Kinsella's heroine has exceeded the limits of this generous offer, and begins furtively to scan her credit-card bills at work, certain that she couldn't have spent the reported sums.

In theory anyway, the world of finance shouldn't be a mystery to Rebecca, since she writes for a magazine called Successful Saving. Struggling with her spendthrift impulses, she tries to heed the advice of an expert and appreciate life's cheaper pleasures: parks, museums, and so forth. Yet her first Saturday at the Victoria and Albert Museum strikes her as a waste. Why? There's not a price tag in sight.

It kind of takes the fun out of it, doesn't it? You wander round, just looking at things, and it all gets a bit boring after a while. Whereas if they put price tags on, you'd be far more interested. In fact, I think all museums should put prices on their exhibits. You'd look at a silver chalice or a marble statue or the Mona Lisa or whatever, and admire it for its beauty and historical importance and everything--and then you'd reach for the price tag and gasp, "Hey, look how much this one is!" It would really liven things up.
Eventually, Rebecca's uncontrollable shopping and her "imaginative" solutions to her debt attract the attention not only of her bank manager but of handsome Luke Brandon--a multimillionaire PR representative for a finance group frequently covered in Successful Saving. Unlike her opposite number in Bridget Jones's Diary, however, Rebecca actually seems too scattered and spacey to reel in such a successful man. Maybe it's her Denny and George scarf. In any case, Kinsella's debut makes excellent fantasy reading for the long stretches between white sales and appliance specials. --Regina Marler

Editorial Reviews

From Amazon.co.uk
With a wry nod to her own nomination for the Literary Review's Bad Sex Award, Wendy Holden's third novel, Fame Fatale, explores what happens when the literati and the glitterati become entangled. Grace Armiger works for Hatto and Hatto, a crumbly old publisher who produce "books that no one reads" by "obscure and unsuccessful authors". When not tripping over Louis de Bernières at literary parties (something of an occupational hazard for all of the bookish types in this novel), Grace tries "interesting uninterested journalists" in Hatto's wares, usually with little success. If her professional life is a mess then her personal life is (surprise, surprise) even worse. Her ardent Marxist boyfriend Sion, the author of the catchily entitled thesis "Why New Labour are Bastards", is not above discarding his principles and his underpants to further his career. A fling with Hatto author Henry Moon, after one too many glasses of Pinot Grigio (Chardonnay is obviously passé in literary circles these days), leaves Grace feeling confused. Her best friend Ellie and diplomat mother, Lady Armiger, are not short of dating advice but her cleaner Maria (who may have just discovered the next Harry Potter) appears to be casting a very bizarre spell on her love life.

Add Champagne D'Vyne, Holden¹s stock vacuous socialite (this time she's gone spiritual); Belinda Black, a big-breasted, leather-skirted, tabloid hack; and Red Campion, an oh-so-sensitive (but possibly sex-addicted) movie star and wannabe writer and an array of familiar comic set pieces are in motion. Fans will delight in (and detractors will still hate) the bad puns, bad sex, slim plotting and an ending that is, without giving too much a way, pure Mills and Boon. Holden is never going to be Evelyn Waugh but there's enough satirical bite to this frothy celebrity romp to make it stand out from the crowd.--Travis Elborough
